The First Luminous Mystery: The Baptism of our Lord

Whenever one does a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, one is also able to experience following the mysteries of the rosary.  We usually suggest to the pilgrims during our group tours to touch their rosary beads on sacred places we visit specially those significant in the life of the Holy Family.

I will start a series of posts with photos of the various places in Holy Land (Israel and Palestine) related to the Holy Rosary. As the Luminous Mysteries was recently added I want to start with this.

I have lifted some bible quotes related to the particular mystery from The Rosary Center  and some meditations from the blog of Fr. John Zuhlsdor

1st Luminous Mystery : The Baptism of our Lord

The Jordan River (Yardenit)
  1. John is baptizing in the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of repentance.
  2. “I am the voice of one crying in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord.”
  3. “One mightier than I is coming after me.”
  4. “I have baptized you with water, He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
  5. Seeing Jesus, John exclaims: “Behold the Lamb of God.”
  6. Against protests of his unworthiness, John baptizes Jesus in the Jordan.
  7. After Jesus’ baptism a voice from Heaven: “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”
  8. The Spirit descends upon Jesus in the form of a dove.
  9. In this heavenly manifestation is instituted the sacrament of baptism.
  10. The divine Trinity is manifested: the voice of the Father is heard as the Spirit descends upon the Son.
Spiritual Fruit: Gratitude for the gift of Faith

It seems providential that the name of our chaplain during this trip is Fr. John.  He was the one who baptised all of us here in Jordan River, where St. John the Baptist baptised Our Lord Jesus.

For three reasons the Savior accepted baptism from John.  First, because He was born a man, that He might fulfill all justice and humility of the Law.  Second, that by His baptism He might confirm John’s baptism.  And third, that by sanctifying the waters of the Jordan through the descent of the dove, he might show the Holy Spirit’s advent in the baptism of believers.
